This book constitutes an in-depth research project spanning over five years on private banking in Gualeguaychú, Entre Ríos, during the 19th century. It analyzes the period (especially the 1860s) in which, faced with a shortage of national metallic currency, the State allowed private entities to issue their own paper money to facilitate regional trade. It focuses on the history of two banks founded by local merchants: the Oxandaburu y Garbino bank and its successor, the Domingo Garbino bank. It details and catalogs banknote issues in denominations of 'pesos bolivianos' and 'pesos fuertes', describing their iconography, which included rural and saladero (meat-salting plant) scenes. The book is profusely illustrated and documented from primary sources, such as period newspapers and notary records, to reconstruct a segment of Argentine financial and numismatic history that was previously scattered or little known.
The work has received international recognition, earning third place in the 2023 Book of the Year award from the International Bank Note Society (IBNS) and first place as the outstanding publication of 2023 by the Fundación Círculo Numismático de Santa Cruz.
